5 Best Reasons to Grow Your Own Food

food

Growing your own food is one of the first steps towards a more self-sustaining lifestyle. And you do not have to be an experienced gardener to start enjoying the fruits, literally and figuratively, of your labor. Whether you are trying your hand at vegetable gardening or growing some herbs in containers at home, here are some of the best reasons why you should keep at it.

1. Save more and enjoy more for less
It may not seem like much, but you can save more over time when you start growing some edibles you often use at home. This could be anything – from herbs like basil to onions or tomatoes and more. There is a long list of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that you can start cultivating even in small spaces. Some could easily thrive in containers so having no backyard for a traditional garden should not be a problem.

2. Freshness
Why pay more for fresh produce when you can harvest or pick some from your own garden. Planting and cultivating edibles provide you with a constant source of the freshest ingredients for your meals.

3. Get introduced to a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs
Gardening can be an educational hobby. It offers plenty of opportunities to learn more about the food you can grow at home. It may even introduce you to some unfamiliar plants that you can easily add to your garden. Growing edibles opens new doors to a whole new world of tastes and flavors you would normally not pay attention to if you rely chiefly on supermarkets or other ready sources of produce and food products.

4. Good for your health and the environment’s
Buying fewer food items that travel thousands of miles to get to you may not be the sole solution to environment problems. But it is a small step towards minimizing your personal impact and carbon footprint. Gardening not only helps you source the freshest food and ingredients at home. It is also a good form of exercise and has a therapeutic effect that will help soothe your mind and body.

5. Gives you a choice on how you grow your food
One of the downside of buying produce from sources you know little about is that you have no idea what went into growing it. You will have no idea of what types of pesticides were used. Growing your own food, however, gives you a choice and control on how you cultivate them. You can use your own chemical-free fertilizers or pesticides and not worry about the potential harmful effects of having them in your food.

How to Use a Backpack Sprayer

Backpack sprayers are the best friends of gardeners. They give gardeners the power to distribute large amounts of liquid to crops they can’t reach. They are more convenient than hand sprayers because they can hold more liquid, eliminating the need to refill over and over again. Carrying a sprayer on your back is also an excellent way to tend to the plants. Whatever it is you’re going to spray—may it be water, pesticide, herbicide, insecticide, or liquid nutrients—a backpack sprayer is the best machine to use.

After checking out Peter’s guide on it, you’ll probably be hyped to use one for your garden. So, without further ado, let’s begin!

First off, prepare your backpack sprayer and liquid. You need a separate container too.

Step #1: ASSEMBLY

If you just bought one, it may either come assembled or not. If it’s not, then follow the instructions of the manufacturer, and put the parts together. Usually, you’ll be required to screw the spray wand (yes, it’s called a wand) onto your spray gun, install the pump handle into the apposite hole, and lastly, fasten the shoulder straps.

Step #2: PREPARE THE LIQUID

After inspecting the parts for damage and putting them together, you need to prepare the liquid you’ll use. Put it in another container. Remember that you need to mix insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides with water. Read the directions on the packaging of the liquid before you mix anything, then do the mixing in the container.

Step #3: POUR THE LIQUID

Now, it’s time to open the backpack sprayer and slowly pour the chosen liquid into it. Don’t rush this part! Avoid leaking chemicals at all costs. After pouring, put back the cap of your sprayer.

Step #4: WEAR IT LIKE A BACKPACK

Obviously, you’ll need to place it on your back. Next, adjust the straps until they’re secured. Don’t tighten them too much; make sure you’re still comfortable with how tight they are. After all, you won’t be able to move freely if you’re too stiff.

Step #5: USE IT!

After priming it, aim the wand to where you need to spray and pull the trigger to release the liquid. Ensure that you pump the handle every five seconds to sustain constant pressure in the tank; or else, you’ll have to prime the sprayer again (like what you did in the first part of this step) whenever the pressure is entirely used up.

Inverter generators are considered to be the best type of generators these days because of the benefits they offer. In fact, a number of inverter generator reviews have begun taking over the internet these days. But compared to the conventional generators we know, are they really better? Let’s find out.

Size and Convenience

Inverter generators are smaller compared to their ancestors. Because of their compact size, they’re easier to transport, handle, and store. They can fit in your car with ease, which makes them ideal to bring for camping or hiking.

On the other hand, conventional generators are heavy, bulky, and noisy. Because they’re heavy, you need to mount them on a frame with wheels just so you can transport them. Some of them are portable, but they’re still larger, noisier, and heavier.

Noise

The biggest difference you’ll probably notice is the noise. Conventional generators are overloud, and they run at constant speeds of usually 3600rpm to generate electricity. Their engine speed must remain the same to produce electricity. Meanwhile, inverter generators can adapt to the amount of power generated using microprocessors. This means they can control their power output based on the load applied, making them quieter.

Fuel Efficiency

Most conventional generators need to produce a particular amount of power to keep appliances running. They’re also huge and heavy. On the other hand, inverters small and light because they don’t require large fuel tanks.

Inverters, however, have a limited fuel capacity which is the reason why they have shorter run times. The good thing is that they are fuel-efficient because they have the capacity to adjust the power generated to match the load’s demands. Inverter generators can save up to 40% of fuel and can run up to 10 hours, which is typically more than enough for users. Inverters also help lessen exhaust emissions, making the environment more sustainable.

Power Quality

Converter generators are engines running at maximum speed to create the needed frequency regardless of the load on it, making the engines throttle up to maintain the amount of produced electricity. Also, the alternator’s output is connected to the load without processing. But inverter generators generate AC electricity by converting DC into AC.

The DC capacitors ease out the generated current to a particular degree before it’s converted into AC and the desired frequency and voltage.

Inverters also supply reliable and consistent power which do not depend on the engine speed. The energy they produce is also considered to be cleaner than the electricity generated by conventional generators—it’s almost the same quality as the power supplied by the electric company.

“Why do I need a cleaner power source?” you ask. Well, because most of the products—like phones, laptops, and television—today are so sensitive to the quality of power used. Cleaner power will prevent them from malfunctions and damage.

As far as one can tell, inverter generators are better than conventional ones. What say you?

The Perks Of Eating Locally

Locally Grown Food

We all know how locally grown food helps keep people healthy with its natural properties. We also know how locally grown food helps keep places sustainable with its environmental benefits.

But you know what?

There’s more to locally grown food than it seems to be.

Here are the perks of eating locally:

It helps us become more mindful.

That is, when it comes to health. Eating locally grown food doesn’t only help keep us healthy with its natural properties, but also help us become more mindful about what we do every single day. This includes what we eat on a daily basis, what we drink on a regular basis, what we do on a daily basis, and where we go on a regular basis – all of which are considered important factors when it comes to a person’s overall well-being. One slip in any of these will result to a person going back to full circle with his progress on becoming healthier.

It helps us become more aware.

That is, when it comes to places. Eating locally grown food doesn’t only help keep places sustainable with its environmental benefits, but also help us become more aware about what we do to our environment. This includes how we treat even the smallest of insects, how we treat especially the biggest of trees, what we do to help maintain our surroundings, and where we go to help improve our surroundings – all of which are considered important factors when it comes to a place’s overall well-being. One slip in any of these will result to a place going back to full circle with its progress on becoming more sustainable.

How about you?
